#94 The Horse

Animalia: Day 77
The Horse

When I was growing up, my sister used to draw horses a lot.
I learned to draw horse from her using the circle method,
where you draw a big and little circle, and attach them to make the head,
then draw another big and little circle to make the body.
I could never really get past that part,
and I never really got the hang of the legs.

In retrospect, horse's legs are probably some of the
hardest things I have ever tried to draw.

I also bought The Marquis TPB of The Inferno by Guy Davis recently,
I read the thing pretty quick, and in the back section there are lots of sketches.
One that caught my eyes was a horse skeleton
(The Marquis is full of them)
with the legs whited out and redrawn a couple times.
Made me feel better, cause even the pros have trouble with horse legs.

#91 The Hippopotamus

Animalia: Day 74
The Hippopotamus

No time to edit or color this one tonight.
Will probably do colors and what not tomorrow,
and then do tomorrow's in 5 minutes on an Applebee's napkin.

Not sure how many of you have seen a Hippo Skull before,
but I have no idea how it works. It is pretty terrifying/awesome?

Also, very difficult to draw a hippo in a coat,
glad I don't have to tailor one.

Also, do monocles really just dangle?
I decided to add a clip that connects to the jacket,
but in the examples I looked up,
they all just dangled or disappeared in the pocket.

Tomorrow: the Hoatzin

#90 The Hedgehog

Animalia: Day 73
The Hedgehog

Bonus sketches.

This one looks like a bat.
Maybe should have gone with the left sketch.
I think its the eye placement. Something wonky happened 'ere.

Tomorrow: the Hippopotamus

#89 The Hamster

Animalia: Day 72
The Hamster

Tried to switch it up a little bit with this one.
Somewhat successful? maybe?
Eh, over it.

Later today: the Hedgehog

#88 The Hammerhead Shark

Animalia: Day 71
The Hammerhead Shark

This was going to be a boring drawing of a shark, so I put a shirt on him.
Now its a boring drawing of a shark wearing a shirt.

Also, hammerheads have Beaker mouths...
Which is kind of that I was going for, but once I drew the head,
I wasn't sure where to go with the muppet theme. Oh well.

Tomorrow: the Hamster

#87 The Hadrosaur

Animalia: Day 70
The Hadrosaur

Just realized how much this looks like birdo. Maybe I should color it pink.
Later today: the Hammerhead

#86 The Gulper Eel

Animalia: Day 69
The Gulper Eel

The Pac-Man of the deep; the Gulper Eel.

Today was supposed to be the guanaco,
but we don't need another camel/llama/whatnot.

Tomorrow: the Hadrosaur

#85 The Groundhog

Animalia: Day 68
The Groundhog

Shoulder up y'r gun and whistle up y'r dog.
Shoulder up y'r gun and whistle up y'r dog.
Off to the woods for to catch a groundhog.
Oh, groundhog.

When I was little I wondered why it had to be a groundhog.
Why couldn't they just check any old object's shadow.
Then it occurred to me that maybe groundhogs sometimes don't have shadows,
like vampire reflections. It's probably disconcerting to
wake up and find that you've lost your shadow.
Groundhogs are the vampires of the underworld.

Plus, bonus groundhog from the vaults.
Drew this for my girlfriend about a year and a half ago:

#83 The Gorilla

Animalia: Day 66
The Gorilla

These are pose sketches with a sketch of the head that I ended up
liking so much that I photoshopped it on to the final.
Also, these are drawn on scrap paper that came from my work;
this crazy guy sent us a 400 page fax of letters like this one.
filled with lots of racism and conspiracy theories.

My favorite:

Dear Sir,

There are one million atoms in a grain of sand.

Sincerely,
TWK

Anywayssssssss.
So I cheated a little bit (read: a lot-a-bit) on this one.
Found this image of the Chystler Building and
I altered it a little bit before tracing it.
Then I blurred and filtered it and set it behind the drawing as the background colors.

Also, obviously took inspiration from King Kong.
Maybe should have darkened the darks in the gorilla to match errthang else.

But either way, I'm sure this is a welcomed change from
the past few days of boring straight-forward pencil drawings.

#82 The Goblin Shark

Animalia: Day 65
The Goblin Shark

The Goblin Shark is a crazy shark who's mouth kind of detaches from its face. Kind of.
It was also the inspiration for Gamera's enemy Zigra.

The drawing is a little weak.
Did a lot of sketches, and didn't much like any of them,
'cept the lil feller in the corner here.

Tomorrow: the Gorilla

#81 The Goat (Girgentana Goat)

Animalia: Day 64
The Goat

I did the Girgentana goat, which is named after a city in Sicily.
It has some weirdo horns. Wierd-O.
Avoided drawing the legs on this one, swooooop.
Anyways, HQs, makin a comeback.

Also, I found this collection of drawings of more or less Cambrian era animals.
My favorites are the Opabinia and Anomalocaris.
The former had five eyes and a elephant truck with a sideways venus fly trap mouth at the end.
Also, the Odaraia is nice because it looks like it lived in a hotdog bun.

Tomorrow: the Goblin Shark

#80 The Gnu

Animalia: Day 63
The Gnu

The Gnu is another name for a wildebeest.
They are pretty exciting and look like they were designed
to be skinned and worn by 80's hair bands.

Pretty awesome.

Tomorrow: the Goat

#79 Giraffe Supplemental

Drew this on the back of a card I sent to my girlfriend,
and thought it was pertinent to giraffes.

#77 The Gila Monster

Animalia: Day 61
The Gila Monster

Did this while watching True Grit, which I enjoyed a lot.
I tried to leave it not colored but it was bothering me,
so a quick color job. I like the background more than the gila.
I read somewhere that it is the only poisonous lizard,
but wikipedia does not corroborate.
Wikipedia also says it only eats 5 or 10 times a year.

Tomorrow: the Giraffe

#73 The Fox

Animalia: Day 57
The Fox

It's a fox.

Tomorrow: the Frilled Neck Lizard

#72 The Fly

Animalia: Day 56
The Fly

This one is late because flies are hard to draw and I wish
Nick had never requested to add it to the list.

I did a couple sketches, and a bigger one, and didn't like any of them.
So this is all you get. Sorry brohams.

The trouble with flies is that there is no angle to draw them from where you
see their face and a good view of their wings. Also, because they stand
belly down, with all legs on the ground, it's hard to get a good angle of
their face in general. This is all apart from the fact that they have
six legs all coming from the same point on their underbellies.
So I wanted to make their furriness look like a fur coat with a fur collar,
but it didn' really happen.

Basically, flies are the worst.

But at the last second, I decided to salvage the sketches
by pulling an Adriaen van de Venne a la"Fishing for Souls"
(hint: bottom left, left of boat).
Also known as a Tom Friedman a la "Untitled (1995)".

See art is good for the earth cause it's all about recycling.

Tomorrow(or hopefully later tonight): the Fox

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

#71 The Flamingo

Animalia: Day 55
The Flamingo

Ink. Overworked this one a bit.
Shouldn't have done so much shading in the body,
and the beak lines got too thick.
I like the legs a lot though.

Tomorrow: the Fly

#70 The Finch (Lady Gouldian Finch)

Animalia: Day 54
The Finch

Originally, we were going to do the ferret today, but I've had
enough of little furries, so we booted it and added the flamingo.

I searched finches, and the Lady Gouldian Finch came up.
It is basically the Google Chrome logo in animal form.

Tomorrow: the Flamingo

#69 The Elk

Animalia: Day 53
The Elk

The return of the HQ.

I wish this new sketchbook had thicker paper, always have
to waste time erasing show-through in photoshop. Lame.
