#135 It's Jesus's Birthday

Its Jesus's Birthday.

in this nativity scene action figure contest.

Ken's is pretty obviously the best nativity scene.
I mean, Jesus is a facehugger hatching from an egg,
and the magi are all robots with pretty awesome gifts.

Right now, first place is an awful snoopy nativity. AWFUL.
Don't let this injustice stand, vote here.

You don't need to register and you can vote once per browser.

Voting ends tonight.

UPDATE: Ken won.
They sent him a Luke Cage/ Powerman double pack.
Swoop!

#134 The Mouse

Animalia: Day 107
The Mouse

Made this mouse.
Obviously Mickey Mousey.

One with mousetrap BG.

One without.
Couldn't decide.
I didn't really like mousetrap background,
didn't turn out how I wanted it.

Tomorrow: the Musk-Ox.

#132 Guest Artist Jenie Gao draws the Spoonbill!

Animalia: Guest Artist!
Jenie Gao - the Spoonbill

Jenie Gao is an artist living and working in Milwaukee, WI.
For as long as I have known her, she has always drawn animals,
so I figured she would be perfect at guest artisting for Animalia.

I didn't know about the spoonbill until Jenie accidentally drew this
one instead of a shoebill, which is also forthcoming for animalia.

Jenie sent me the pen and ink drawing and I colored it,
but I really think Jenie's B/W drawings work better w/o color.
(Also, I had trouble figuring out what color I should do the b/g)
flamingo pink, Big Bird yellow, and sky blue.

Anyways, thanks Jenie!

#131 Christmas Gift / Elephant Part Two

Did an elephant drawing for a white elephant gift exchange.

From the little elephant in the top left corner.

Kind of an Animalia supplement.
Here is the original elephant post.

#130 The Moose

Animalia: Day 105
The Moose

Got tired of google searching animals for Animalia and only
getting results of hunters holding up limp animal carcasses.

Got kind of a Pietà vibe. and a PETA vibe. also Goya. also Rembrandt.

Started with a pretty loose pencil sketch
and went for it with a brush tip marker.
This was an attempt to try and keep the drawing much looser.
All of the shading/ details were done in the inking, rather than penciling.
Didn't plan out the shading well and it got messy in the body.
First time I think I've really had to fix the drawing in photoshop for Animalia.

Tried to keep it loose in the coloring too.
I think it turned out well.

Also, finished my first semester of Grad school.
That's the only reason y'all got a post.
Won't be back to everyday, but they will happen more often.
Hopefully.

xoxo
Jun.

Tomorrow: the Mountain Goat

#129 The Monkfish

Animalia: Day 104
The Monkfish

Did a couple of these, and was not happy.

Looked at some Mignola for inspiration.

Photoshopped and 'lored (as in colored).
Some of the colors happened as a happy accident when I turned
up saturation and the subtle changes became really bright.
Pretty happy with it.

Hopefully the next post will happen sooner rather than later,
but I wouldn't count on it. Final papers this week.

Missed you all.
xoxo
jun

Tomorrow(wishful thinking): the Moose.

Sketches from SMU Meadows Museum and Mustang Sculpture.

From the 19th C. part of the Museum.
The little sketch is a Goya, and the lady is
from another painting in the same room.

#125 The Mole

Animalia: Day 102
The Mole

Mole!
Went through a few designs.
Star-nosed moles can smell under water.
They blow out little air bubbles out of their noses,
then suck the air back in to smell underwater.
Apparently other semi aquatic mammals

Sorry it has been so long.
I've been busy consuming Panofskittles and those sour little Warburgs.

Hope you enjoyed the revival of Animalia.

Tomorrow: the Mongoose.

#124 The Mexican Mole Lizard

Animalia: Day 101
The Mexican Mole Lizard

It's got no back legs,
it's tiny, pink, and shiny,
it's got the body of a worm,
it's got the hands of a mole,
and it's a lizard.
Surrously...

Anyways, sorry it took so long,
sorry this isn't in color,
and sorry it's a little bit racist.
But you're going to have to wait a hot minute for the next one, probs.

Just be glad I didn't put a revolver/tamale/maraca in his hand.

xoxo missed you all,
Jun.

Tomorrow(haha): the Mole

#123 Meadows Museum Sketches

This is not an animal post.
School is mad hectic.
So instead of an animal,
you're getting sketches from the Meadows Museum at SMU.
Done during the class I am TAing.

On the left is Antonis Mor's portrait of the 16 year old Alessandro Farnese,
and from top to bottom is Maino, Adoration of the Shepherds;
Murillo, Jacob Laying Peeled Rods Before the Flocks of Laban;
Zurbaran, The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine of Siena;
and a putto from a Murillo Immaculate Conception.
They're all Baroque, except the Mor.

#122 Gabe Slavitt Guest Drawing of the Gnu

Animalia: Guest Artist!
Gabe Slavitt - the Gnu

So, no Mexican Mole Rat today(I know, try to hold back the tears),
But! Instead we have a super special guest artist.

I asked my good friend and former roomie Gabriel Slavitt
if he would draw a Gnu for me, which he did.
While I was in Kansas City, we met up and there was a handoff,
and now it is here for your consumption.

I added a bit of color for the final bit.

Also, you can look and both Nick's Gnu and
my original Gnu if you feel so inclined.

#121 The Marmoset

Animalia: Day 100! Swoop!
The Marmoset

Swooooop. Figure 100.
Since there are about 183 animals on our list, we are over halfway done,
butttttt.... since I am now in grad school, the second half
will probably take a LOT more than the first half did.

Also, if you compare my nephew's face (top right)
to that of a marmoset, you might be convinced that he is one.

(probably not actually) Tomorrow: the Mexican Mole Lizard

#120 The Mantis

Animalia: Day 99
The Mantis

All I really know about mantises(pl?) is that
the females eat the males after mating.

That and they use really fancy silverware.

Mainly the body was hard to draw, so I put a table in front of it.

Tomorrow(maybe?): the Marmoset

Friday, August 19, 2011

#119 The Manta Ray

Animalia: Day 98
The Manta Ray

Who knew this would actually get posted today? Not me!
Also, sneak peak bonus jams of the mantis in the top sketch.
Too many sucker fish? I figure'd I'd go all out. Chyeah dawg.

Tomorrow (maybe actually): the Mantis

Thursday, August 18, 2011

#118 The Lystrosaur

Animalia: Day 97
The Lystrosaur

Lystrosaurs are cool. I colored mine purple.
I know, Barney is purple... Get over it.

Look em up though, they're exciting looking.

SORRYYYYY for the delay.

I get consistent internet on the 31st.
We'll see how animals suffer as a result of me going to grad school.

Tomorrow (but not really): the Manta Ray

#117 Update

So I know, I am getting behind again.
I finished the Lystrosaurus today,
and should be back on schedule this week.

However, I am on vacay with my fam right now,
so I have no scanner and no tablet,
so you're going to have to wait a WHOLE WEEK
for any more pic-y updates from me.

In the meanspacewhiletimes, check out Nick's Animalia drawings.
He's a little behind (read: "way behind") but I'm sure he will
catch up once I start moving to Texas and doing grad school.

Anyways, see you in a week?

#116 The Lynx

Animalia: Day 96
The Lynx

Day late, whatever.
Maybe I'll catch up, maybe not.
The back leg on this got ugly and funny and then blacked out.
Done with a crayola brush pen my work bought for me,
BOOM.

PS: No drip crayola brush markers drip everywhere.

The lynx has giant feet sometimes so it can walk on snow.

Tomorrow: the Lystrosaurus

#115 The Lovebird

Animalia: Day 95
The Lovebird

BOOOORRRRIIIINGGGG
Oh well. cute at least?

Tomorrow: the Lynx

#114 The Lookdown

Animalia: Day 94
The Lookdown

What an awesome face this fish has.

Tomorrow: the Lovebird

#113 The Lobster

Animalia: Day 93
The Lobster

Page of lobster sketches that led to lobster punch.

The idea kind of started with "How do I draw a lobster mouth,"
which led me to decide to ignore what they actually look like and

The whole image took a long time to compose and work from
sketch to line drawing, and got messy the whole way through.
The legs and tail were particularly tricky.

It's times like these I wish I took the time to do sketches,
then trace for line work; but that aint gon' happen.

I know this fight should be on a blue background because it's aquatic,
but I was so fond of the brown/tan/beige, I had to post it.

Sorry the lobster took so long.
Hope it was worth the wait.

Tomorrow: the Lookdown

#112 Dad drawings

I tried to make some portraits of my dad at his request.
I am not the best with portraits, and I'm especially bad at caricatures.
I am continually impressed by amusement park caricaturists.

Anyways, so I did two semi finished looking drawings, and here them is:

#111 The Lionfish

Animalia: Day 92
The Lionfish

So I did this in the airport on the way to Chicago for G-Fest.
Unfortunately, it was pretty busy this past week and I didn't really get any more done,
especially because I got food poisoning the second day I was in Chicago.

I threw up a couple times laid on the floor for a few days.

Then went to Dallas and was super busy some more.

That's why there have been no posts;
that and Nick is catching up, kind of.

Tomorrow: the Lobster

#110 Updateeee

So here is the news.

I am in Chicago for a Godzilla convention.
Then to Dallas to look for an apartment for grad school.
Then back to Boston, then more traveling with fam,
then moving to Dallas via KY and MO.
So posts for the next few weeks will be sporadic,
but hopefully I will still be getting drawings done everyday.
I will scan the lion fish when I get a chance.

Luv yalls.
