Animalia: Guest Artist!
Jenie Gao - the Spoonbill
Jenie Gao is an artist living and working in Milwaukee, WI.
For as long as I have known her, she has always drawn animals,
so I figured she would be perfect at guest artisting for Animalia.
I didn't know about the spoonbill until Jenie accidentally drew this
one instead of a shoebill, which is also forthcoming for animalia.
Jenie sent me the pen and ink drawing and I colored it,
but I really think Jenie's B/W drawings work better w/o color.
(Also, I had trouble figuring out what color I should do the b/g)
Either way, shoebills are crazy colors:
flamingo pink, Big Bird yellow, and sky blue.
Anyways, thanks Jenie!
So glad to see a roseate spoonbill by Jenie! Definitely one of my favorite birds. Come to south Florida to see them in the wild! When I was little I used to think they were duck headed flamingoes.
ReplyDelete/they totally ARE duck headed flamingos.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think the colored version is pretty sweet, and a nice surprise. Thanks for inviting me to do this, even if I don't know how to read, or at least the difference between the word "shoe" and "spoon." I'm just going to claim that I made the change intentionally because I knew it would conjure up some fond memories for John Witty about duck headed flamingos.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing it!
ReplyDeletethis collaboration makes me happy!
ReplyDeleteDammit. You beat me to posting this because I'm so behind.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just noticed that you were plugging along.
Need to get back on this wagon.
