#135 It's Jesus's Birthday

Its Jesus's Birthday.

in this nativity scene action figure contest.

Ken's is pretty obviously the best nativity scene.
I mean, Jesus is a facehugger hatching from an egg,
and the magi are all robots with pretty awesome gifts.

Right now, first place is an awful snoopy nativity. AWFUL.
Don't let this injustice stand, vote here.

You don't need to register and you can vote once per browser.

Voting ends tonight.

UPDATE: Ken won.
They sent him a Luke Cage/ Powerman double pack.
Swoop!

#134 The Mouse

Animalia: Day 107
The Mouse

Made this mouse.
Obviously Mickey Mousey.

One with mousetrap BG.

One without.
Couldn't decide.
I didn't really like mousetrap background,
didn't turn out how I wanted it.

Tomorrow: the Musk-Ox.

#132 Guest Artist Jenie Gao draws the Spoonbill!

Animalia: Guest Artist!
Jenie Gao - the Spoonbill

Jenie Gao is an artist living and working in Milwaukee, WI.
For as long as I have known her, she has always drawn animals,
so I figured she would be perfect at guest artisting for Animalia.

I didn't know about the spoonbill until Jenie accidentally drew this
one instead of a shoebill, which is also forthcoming for animalia.

Jenie sent me the pen and ink drawing and I colored it,
but I really think Jenie's B/W drawings work better w/o color.
(Also, I had trouble figuring out what color I should do the b/g)
flamingo pink, Big Bird yellow, and sky blue.

Anyways, thanks Jenie!

#131 Christmas Gift / Elephant Part Two

Did an elephant drawing for a white elephant gift exchange.

From the little elephant in the top left corner.

Kind of an Animalia supplement.
Here is the original elephant post.

#130 The Moose

Animalia: Day 105
The Moose

Got tired of google searching animals for Animalia and only
getting results of hunters holding up limp animal carcasses.

Got kind of a Pietà vibe. and a PETA vibe. also Goya. also Rembrandt.

Started with a pretty loose pencil sketch
and went for it with a brush tip marker.
This was an attempt to try and keep the drawing much looser.
All of the shading/ details were done in the inking, rather than penciling.
Didn't plan out the shading well and it got messy in the body.
First time I think I've really had to fix the drawing in photoshop for Animalia.

Tried to keep it loose in the coloring too.
I think it turned out well.

Also, finished my first semester of Grad school.
That's the only reason y'all got a post.
Won't be back to everyday, but they will happen more often.
Hopefully.

#129 The Monkfish

Animalia: Day 104
The Monkfish

Did a couple of these, and was not happy.

Looked at some Mignola for inspiration.

Photoshopped and 'lored (as in colored).
Some of the colors happened as a happy accident when I turned
up saturation and the subtle changes became really bright.
Pretty happy with it.

Hopefully the next post will happen sooner rather than later,
but I wouldn't count on it. Final papers this week.

Missed you all.

Tomorrow(wishful thinking): the Moose.

#128 Sketches

Sketches from SMU Meadows Museum and Mustang Sculpture.

From the 19th C. part of the Museum.
The little sketch is a Goya, and the lady is
from another painting in the same room.
